FLAWLESS No inclusions inside or on the surface of the gem. Extremely rare. VVS LEVELS 1 and 2 Very, very slight inclusion in or on the gem. Inclusions are not visible to the human eye. No black inclusions, feathers (micro cracks) or cracks. Extremely rare in the marketplace. VS LEVEL 1 and 2 Very slight inclusion in or on the gem. Not often seen in the marketplace and not visible to the human eye. No carbon, feathers or cracks. SI LEVEL 1 Slight inclusions in or on the gem. This grade indicates that the inclusion is not visible the the human eye from the top or bottom of the gem. No carbon or cracks occur, but a small feather may exist entirely inside the gem. SI LEVEL 2 Slight inclusions in or on the gem. This is the most controversial and inflated grade. Strictly graded, the inclusions should be extremely hard to see with the human eye from the top, but easier to see from the bottom. Black inclusions should not be eye visible, and small feathers may reach the surface. NOTE many gems are called SI2, but are actually I1. There is a large jump in price between an honest SI2 and an honest I1. If you are considering an SI2 and an inclusion is seen easily with your own eyes, it is often an I1 and should be a much lower price. I1, INCLUDED LEVEL 1 A close look with the human eye will show minor inclusions, possibly small black carbon, a small crack, or cloudiness. Prices drop significantly at this level. Many I1's are sold as S12's so the buyer must beware to know the difference. This is the AVERAGE quality sold in the marketplace for engagement rings and better jewellery. I2, INCLUDED LEVEL 2 The human eye will detect easily, the birthmarks inside or outside the gem. the inclusions are substantial enough to hinder much of this beauty. This quality is often used in necklaces, bracelets, wedding bands, and earrings by mass merchandisers. I3, INCLUDED LEVEL 3 Much of the gem is covered by inclusions.
