THE STORY OF EKATI™
BHP Billiton developed extensive programs with the Dogrib, Metis, and Dene community to preserve traditional knowledge of the land, as well as to ensure long term economic prosperity. Outstanding treaty claims (some were a century old) were voluntarily resolved. BHP encouraged the communities to organize businesses to become suppliers to the facility. As a result, several new trucking, construction, and food service companies are owned and professionally managed by community businesses.

EKATI™ is the largest private employer in the NWT. 80% of the employees are from the NWT; and half of them are from the native community.

The EKATI™ Diamond Mine also plays a leadership role in environmental management. Air quality, water resources, wildlife habitat, and land reclamation teams manage their resources to previously unprecedented levels in the mining industry.

The most exciting opportunity however, was an agreement with the NWT government to retain 10% of all the gem quality diamonds for the purposes of creating a secondary industry. The vision would be to cut diamonds in the NWT and market those diamonds as 'mined and manufactured (cut)' in Canada.
