Perhaps the most troubling part of the ruling is that the Canadian regulators have given consumers, and indeed the world, the false pretense that 'Made in Canada' should more accurately be labeled 'Mined in Canada.' At the Diamond Gallery we have access to both 'Mined in Canada' diamonds and 'Mined & Cut in Canada' branded diamonds in several price ranges.
In any case, as a consumer, research is your best tool to determine if your new diamond will be 'mined' or 'mined & cut' in Canada. Our ongoing research has indicated that most jewellers know very little about 'Source of Origin' in the diamonds they are selling. We strongly suggest that ethics and integrity should become a key element in your ability to select a jeweller that practices disclosure.
Before entering into a discussion with a diamond dealer or jeweler, look for his or her credentials on the wall. Understand what they mean (see 'Appraising' section of this website for a list of credentials). Consider your choice of a jeweller as you would any other professional. A lack of credentials will often indicate a lack of knowledge to answer your questions accurately. We have seen this almost daily as consumers shop the marketplace, picking up limited information from store to store. When they arrive at the Diamond Gallery, they are often armed with an inaccurate understanding of diamonds they are about to spend thousands of dollars on.
