To understand the cutting characteristics of gemstones is the most important and complex component of the Five Cs. This is craftsmanship. The precision and delicacy with which your diamond is cut will determine its brilliance, its fire, and its ultimate beauty. "Cutting is an art form that can release a magnificent fire from within the gem," expressed Allan. "Intense competition in recent years have split our industry into two directions when it relates to cut."
The artisans have pursued strict proportions in faceting. First, the basic proportions are created. Then they meticulously craft the more difficult symmetry (how facets interconnect to ensure light travels into the diamond, across the lower facets, and back out to the eye) for the final finishing. When a diamond is cut this way, the cutter can release enormous amounts of dispersion and scintillation. When graded as fine, excellent or ideal cut, this quality of craftsmanship can add 15-40% to the value of the gem. Premium cutting is only considered in high colour high clarity stones.
